Elisha's Space: Someone told you that paying attention to your body is new age, that noticing your breath is opening a door to something dark, that somatic therapy is spiritually without Jesus, and you believe them because you were trying to protect your faith. And that instinct, that instinct to guard what's holy, that's not wrong. But what if the body you were told to distrust is the very body God designed to carry you through what words alone can't reach? What if your nervous system isn't a back door to the occult, it's the front door to the Psalms? Welcome to Elisha's Space, a sanctuary for healing, growth, and for the kind of conversations that actually change things. I'm Elisha, a counselor, an author, and someone who has sat in the same stuff places you have. If you've been listening for a while, I see you, and I'm glad you're back. Today's episode is Practical Clinical Bud-Pastoral, where answering the question I get more than almost any other from clients, from listeners, from people in my counseling practice who were told that somatic therapy conflicts with their faith. I want to walk through this carefully, because I'm not here to dismiss your concern. I'm here to give it an honest clinical and theological answer. So stay with me. Let me name what I know some of you are carrying and if I say this isn't you and if this isn't you, stay because someone you love is carrying it. You tried a breathing exercise. Someone in your Bible said, said, that sounds like yoga. You mentioned nervous system regulation. A well-meaning friend sent you an article about new age infiltration in the church. Your therapist suggested body scanning and your gut said, is this okay? And you stopped, not because it was working. not because your body didn't need it, you stopped because the fear of getting it wrong spiritually was louder than the pain of staying stuck physically. Here's what fear does. It keeps you in a cage that God didn't build. It tells you that your body, the body... Paul calls the temple is too dangerous to pay attention to. But your nervous system, the system God designed, is something you should ignore. And that healing has to happen from the neck up or it doesn't count. Nothing is wrong with you for having that fear. That fear is a protection response. But protection responses have a shelf life. And this one has kept you stuck long enough. So what is somatic therapy? Let's strip away the Instagram version and get clinical. Soma is the Greek word for the body. That's it. Somatic therapy means body-oriented therapy. It's an umbrella term for approaches that recognize what neuroscience has confirmed. Trauma doesn't just live in your thoughts, it lives in your tissue, in your nervous system, and the way your shoulders climb towards your ears when someone mentions your childhood, and the way your stomach drops before you even know why. This isn't philosophy. ⁓ This is ⁓ Somatic therapy modalities like somatic experiencing developed by Dr. Peter Levine, which works with the body's innate ability to complete stress responses that got stuck. It includes EMDR, which uses bilateral stimulation to help the brain repress, to help the brain reprocess traumatic memory. It includes breath work, not as a spiritual ritual. but as a way to activate the vagus nerve and shift your autotomic nervous system out of survival mode. When I guide a client through a body scan, I'm not leading them into a meditative void. I'm asking, where is the tension? Where is the holding? Because your body has been trying to tell you something and no one taught you how to listen. Knowledge isn't just power for trauma survivors. Knowledge is safety. And knowing what somatic therapy actually is, clinically, not culturally, is the first step towards knowing whether it conflicts with your faith. Now, this matter, somatic therapy is not energy healing. It's not chakra work. It's not Reiki. It's not channeling. It's not manifestation. Those are distinct practices with distinct philosophical frameworks. And you are right to exercise discernment about them. But here's the mistake I see faithful people make over and over. They hear body and they hear spiritual danger as if the body itself is the problem. As if paying attention to your physiology is the same as opening yourself to something occult. It is not. When a doctor listens to your heartbeat, that's not new age. When a physical therapist helps you release a locked muscle. That's not new age. When I, as a counselor, have noticed that your breath has gone shallow because your nervous system just perceived a threat. ⁓ That is a clinical observation of a God designed system. The confusion happens some people use body based language to teach body based philosophy. But the technique is not the theology. A breathing exercise is morally neutral. What gives it direction is the framework you bring to it. Let your nervous system hear that. The technique is not the theology. Now let me do what I do best. What this space was built for. Let me show you what scripture actually says about your body, because I think you'll find it's more affirming than what your church lobby told you. Genesis 2, 7, the Lord God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life. Your very first moment of existence was God breathing into a body. not a spirit floating in a void, a body. Breath and dust, that's your origin story. Psalms 139 verses 13 and 14. You knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made. The Hebrew word for knit, or come, means to weave with intricate pattern. God didn't just make your soul, he wove your nervous system. every vagal pathway, every neurotransmitter. That's his handiwork. 1 Corinthians 6 19. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit? Not your spirit is a temple. Your body, the container, the structure, the place where God's presence dwells. You don't honor a temple by befeasing to learn how it was built. And here's the one that refrains everything. Romans 8 11. If the spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwell in you. He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies, not just your eternal bodies, your immortal body, the one that's tense right now, the one that can't sleep, the one that carries what your mind has tried to forget. If the Holy Spirit dwells in your body, then learning how your body works isn't ignoring God. It's stewarding what he gave you. It's not bypassing faith. It's inhabiting the body that faith was always meant to live in. His peace is not dependent on your circumstances being resolved. It's a regulated nervous system in the presence of a safe God. And sometimes the most faithful thing you can do is learn how to let your body receive what your spirit already believes. Let me address the objection heads on because I know it's coming. But Elisha, the new age uses breath work. The new age uses body awareness. Doesn't that make it compromise? Here's what I want you to consider. The new age also uses music. It also uses community. It also uses silence, nature, and ritual. We don't abandon those things, we redeem them. We bring them under the Lordship of Christ. C.S. Lewis said it better than I can. There is no neutral ground in the universe. Every square inch, every split second is claimed by God and counterclaimed by Satan. The enemy doesn't create, he distorts. He takes what God designed and twists it. That means the distortion is proof of the original's value. If the enemy wants your body numb, silent, and disassociated from your awareness, what does that tell you about the power of body-based healing? The question isn't, does the new age use breath work? The question is, who made breath? And Genesis is clear, God did. Before any guru, any tradition, and any distortion, God breathed, and he called it life. I'm not asking you to accept every somatic practice uncritically. I'm asking you to stop rejecting your own body out of fear of something it was never part of. So how do you engage somatic therapy as a believer? You use the framework we've built right here in this space, REST, R-E-S-T, R-regulate. Before you can discern anything, your nervous system has to be regulated enough to think clearly. Fear-driven theology is dysregulated theology. You cannot make sound spiritual discernment from a body that's in survival mode. So yes, you breathe first, not to enter a spiritual void, to come back online so you can think. E. Experience. Somatic therapy asks you to notice what's happening in your body without trying to fix it immediately. That's not mysticism. That's honesty. The Psalms model this constantly. David doesn't spiritualize his physical distress. He names it, my bones are in agony. My heart is turned to wax. That's somatic language. 3,000 years before Peter Levine. S, surrender. Here's where it gets theological. Sematic therapy at its healthiest doesn't make your body the authority. It makes your body the informant. You listen to your body so that you can surrender what you find to God. Lord, my chest is tight and I don't know why. which you show me what my body is carrying that my mind has forgotten. That's not new age, that's prayer. T, trust. You trust that the body God designed is not your enemy. You trust that the Holy Spirit in you is not threatened by your own physiology. You trust that healing doesn't require you to choose between faithfulness and feeling better because the God who made your body is the same God who redeems it. want to give you something you can do right now, not later, right here. A practice that is both somatic and scriptural. I call it the body check prayer. And if you're driving, keep your eyes open. You can still do this. Step one, arrive. Close your eyes if that's safe, or just soften your gaze. Take one breath, not a special breath, just your breath, and let it be what it is. Step two, scan. Without trying to change anything, notice. Start at the top of your head. Is there tension there? Tightness in your forehead, your jaw. Just notice. move to your shoulders. Are they lifted, dropped, locked? Move to your chest, the place where you carry it all. Is the weight there? Is there a holding pattern? Your body has been running on autopilot. your stomach, your gut. What science now calls your second brain. What is it holding? Step three, name. Take whatever you notice, the tightest place, the loudest signal, and name it to God, not with a polished prayer, with honest words. Lord, my chest is heavy. Father, my jaw has been clenched for years and I didn't realize it. Spirit, my body is carrying something my mind has been trying to forget. That's it. That's the body check prayer. You noticed, you named it. You gave it to the one who already knew. Step four, receive. Now breathe one breath and let your nervous system hear that you are not running from it. Father, I am grateful that you made these bodies, that you knit together the very nervous systems that we are learning to regulate. It's not visualization. That's not Eastern meditation. That is a person who loves you, paying attention to the temple that you gave them and are inviting them into what they find. So here's what I want you to take with you. Sematic therapy is not anti-faith. It's anti-disassociation. It's the practice of coming back into the body that God gave you, not to worship the body, but to worship in the body, fully present, fully embodied, the way you were designed to be. The early church understood this. the incarnation, God becoming flesh is the ultimate validation of the body. God didn't send a philosophy, he sent a body. A manual walked into your nervous system and called it good. Your seven day challenge every morning this week, just seven days. Do the body check prayer. One minute, that's it. Before you open your Bible, before you check your phone, before the day runs you arrive in your body. Notice, name, receive. Notice if your body starts to speak. Notice if something. that's been clenched for months begins to soften. Notice if a feeling you've been avoiding shows up, not because you went looking for danger, but because you finally made it safe enough for the truth to surface. And if you're afraid, good. That's your nervous system telling you this matters. Regulate first, breathe, then discern. The Holy Spirit in you is not threatened by your own awareness. if this episode helped you share it.
