Nervous System Regulation: The Faith-Based Protocol Your Body Has Been Waiting For
Tonight's Episode
Your hands are shaking. Your chest is tight. You don't know why — and you're tired of feeling like something is wrong with you. In this episode of Elisha's Space, we walk through a complete nervous system regulation protocol built for Christians who are done with "just pray more" advice and ready for something that actually works with the body God gave you.
You'll learn the neuroscience behind vagus nerve activation, why trauma and spiritual abuse leave the nervous system stuck in alarm, and the R.E.S.T. framework (Recognize, Exhale extended, Sensory anchor, Truth spoken) — a step-by-step somatic and scriptural practice you can use anywhere, in under five minutes.
This episode includes a full guided practice and a breath prayer, so you can regulate in real time, not just learn about it.

Elisha's Space: Your hands are shaking, or your chest feels tight, and you can't figure out why you said you'd stay calm this time, and then you snapped anyway. Now you're sitting in the shame of it, asking, What is wrong with me? Nothing's wrong with you. Your nervous system is doing exactly what it was designed to do, it's just stuck today. I'm giving you the full protocol, the one people search for by name and never get the faith based version of Nervous System Regulation Step by Step, rooted in both scripture and science. Stay with me. Welcome to Elisha Space, a sanctuary for healing, growth, and for the kind of honest conversations that actually change things. I'm Elisha, your host, a counselor, an author, and someone who has sat in the same stuff places you have. If you've been listening for a while, I see you, and I'm glad you're back. And if you're new here, welcome home. Today's episode is practical, clinical, but pastoral. I'm going to walk you through the exact protocol I use in session with clients navigating trauma, anxiety, and burnout, the same one I use myself. This isn't a five-minute breathing hack. It's a full body, full spirit framework you can return to every single time your body goes into alarm. So let's do it. Let's start with what's actually happening in your body. Because knowledge isn't just power for trauma survivors, knowledge is safety. Your autotomic nervous system has two main branches sympathetic, that's fight or flight, and parasympathetic, specifically the vagal branch. That's rest, digest, connect. The vagus nerve literally wandering in Latin. ⁓ It from your brainstem down through your heart. your lungs and your gut. And it's the physical wiring behind what scripture calls peace that surpasses understanding. When you've lived through trauma, whether that's a single event or years of walking on eggshells in a high control family or a spiritually abusive environment, your nervous system learns to live in alarm. It stops asking, is this actually dangerous? and assuming ⁓ everything is ⁓ not weakness that's adaptation your kept you alive ⁓ but adaptation that once protected you become ⁓ the very thing keeps you stuck is there tension there right now as I'm talking your jaw your shoulders just notice it don't fix it yet Just notice. Here's where I want to correct something the church has gotten wrong for a long time. We've told people just pray more, as if peace is purely a willpower or faith problem. But this isn't visualization, this is physiology. His peace is not dependent on your circumstances being resolved. It is a regulated nervous system in the presence of a safe God. Philippians 4 doesn't say the peace that surpasses understanding will fix your circumstances. It says it will guard your heart and mind. That's a nervous system promise as much as it is a spiritual one. So here's the protocol. I call it rest, four steps. And you can run through all four in under five minutes. Anywhere. R recognize. Name what's happening in the body without judgment. My chest is tight. My hands are shaking. This is my sympathetic nervous system activating. Naming it takes it out of the shadows. E. Exhale extended. Your exhale is what signals safety to your vagus nerve. Inhale for four counts. Exhale for eight. The extended Exhale is doing something inhale alone cannot do. It's telling your body the threat has passed. S sensory anchor. Five things you can see, four things you can touch, three things you can hear. This pulls you out of the trauma time loop and back into the actual room you're standing in, the present tense, which is where God meets you. T, truth Spoken out loud, not just thought, spoken. I am safe in this moment. God is near. My body is allowed to settle. Speaking it engages a different neural pathway than silently thinking it. Let's practice it together right now. If you're driving, just listen. Don't close your eyes. If you're safe to fully participate, get comfortable. Hand on your chest. And feel your heartbeat. Breathe in for four and out for eight. Let your nervous system hear that you are not rounding from it. You are staying and staying is safe. One more time in for four. Out for eight. Notice one thing you can see right now. Notice one thing you can hear. And say quietly, even just in your own head, I am safe in this moment. Now let's bring this into prayer. This is a breath prayer. Inhale on the first phrase, exhale on the second. Be still, inhale. And exhale and know that I am God. Inhale, Father, I am grateful. And exhale that you made these bodies, that you knit together the very nervous systems that we are learning to regulate. Teach us to trust the safety you built into our design, where we have confused stillness with danger, retrain us, where our bodies have carried what our minds could not meet us there. In Jesus' name, amen. Here is your challenge for the next seven days, twice a day, morning and one moment of stress. Run the rest protocol. Recognize extended exhale, sensory anchor, truth spoken out loud. Not because your body is broken and needs fixing, because your body has been asking for this all along, and now you know how to answer it. If this episode helped you, share it. Text it to one person you know is struggling, someone who's been asking, What's wrong with me, and just needs to hear that nothing is.
